Celebrate Good Times...

It's been a time of celebration in fourth grade!

Last week, students finished up their narrative pieces and participated in our Celebration of Writing event.  We have been working with Jenna Lincoln, a published author, who has been helping us better understand the life of an author.  During our celebration, students had the opportunity to play the roles of a literary agent at a publishing company and an author trying to get their piece published by a publishing company.  Authors created a "pitch" as a short and exciting way to share about their story to entice literary agents to inquire more about it and and offer them a publishing contract.  It was so fun to hear the buzz and excitement in our room.  Students were beaming with confidence as they shared their writing!

On Friday of last week, fourth grade hosted our school's North Star assembly.  We have done a lot of work developing our understanding of the word impact.  One of our year-long learning targets is: I can be aware of my impact on others and their impact on me (both positive and negative), so we decided to share our understanding of this message and urge our entire Fox Creek Crew to have a positive impact on others.  Students took ownership of their learning and each played a significant role in having a positive impact on our Crew as they prepared the drum circle, personal impact statements, and speaking roles for the North Star.  The message that was conveyed in our North Star came to life in the preparation leading up to it.  Students wowed our entire Crew with their performance!

Halloween was celebrated with a costume parade around the school followed by yummy, healthy treats and "Minute-to-Win-It" style games in our classroom.  Fun was had by all!  Thanks to families who donated items and their time to make our party a success!

We kicked off our new case study with a visit from the Legendary Ladies and field work at the Western Museum of Mining and Industry in Colorado Springs.  The Legendary Ladies are a non-profit group of women who portray famous women in history who had an impact on the West.  We learned about Maud Nelson (Women's Baseball Hall of Fame), Mother Jones (labor activist), Dr. Susan Anderson (frontier physician), Captain Jack (lady miner), and Katherine Lee Bates (poet).  These ladies are our mentors for our own writing of monologues.  Students will research and learn about a famous Coloradan who had an impact in some way.  Along the way, we will learn how to write and perform a monologue as a way to share important information with others.

Please visit the Legendary Ladies to get more information on their programs.  They have two upcoming performances which might be of interest to you and your family.  Each performance is free of charge and such a wonderful learning opportunity.

Our visit to the Museum of Mining and Industry helped us better understand how Colorado's past impacted industry today.  Students learned about the harsh realities miners faced and how mining impacted people and the environment.

Fourth graders continue to work hard and learn lots and we're celebrating their perseverance, successes, and growth along the way!
