Back to School - Off and Running!
What started out as an empty classroom...
quickly turned into a room filled with eager and energetic learners!
Over the past month, we've been developing our Habits of Character and getting to know one another. Students had the opportunity to share their "Me Bags" which has allowed us to learn about our Crew members on a more personal level. It was exciting to see our Crew making connections with one another and forming new friendships. We continue to get to know each other and form connections through our daily Togetherness time.
Students had to use critical-thinking and collaboration to problem-solve how they were going to save Sam, the gummy worm, whose boat capsized in the middle of the ocean. Every group rose to the challenge and came up with creative solutions on how to put the life-jacket on Sam and turn his boat over so he could travel safely to shore. To make it extra challenging, students could only use paperclips to perform the rescue.
This year, our Crew has been paired up with Miss Sarah's first grade Crew for "YO" (Younger/Older) Buddies. It has been wonderful watching our Crew members take on a leadership role as they support their younger buddies in their learning.
Students have been taking ownership of our classroom as they worked together to create our Crew Promise. They answered questions about what they thought would help our Crew be successful throughout the year, then came to a common agreement on what it would take for us to reach this goal.
There was a buzz around our room as students explored and organized the books within our classroom library. They categorized our books by genre or by series and created personal reading lists as they browsed through the contents of each tub.
Students learned about what makes a "just-right" book and are recommending books to one another through Biblionasium.
It has been a delight to watch our classroom fill up with joyful learning!
