Kindness Spreads

Legendary Ladies
As students entered into their final phase of composing their monologues, they were able to benefit from the guidance of the Legendary Ladies.  We had the opportunity to learn from Portia Mansfield (dancer), Emily Griffith (teacher), Helen Hunt Jackson (writer and Indian rights activist), Molly Brown (the Unsinkable), and Lillie Coit (firefighter).  At the end of each performance, students were able to ask questions about how these women researched, wrote, revised, and performed their monologues.  They used this information to aid in the formation of their own monologues which they will be sharing during our Celebration of Learning on Tuesday evening.

Chorus Concert
Last week, we had the opportunity to watch our incredible Fox Creek Chorus perform in a school-wide assembly.  The chorus, made up of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students, sang many familiar songs from popular movies such as The Greatest Showman on Earth, Coco, and Moana.  The theme for their performance was This is Me, which focused on power of staying true to yourself and being uniquely who you are.  A powerful message was communicated through the songs that were sung.  Way to go, Fox Creek Chorus!

YO Buddies
When we met with our YO Buddies last week, students were given a challenge to build the longest paper chain possible.  However, they were only allowed to use one sheet of construction paper, scissors, and a glue stick.  It was exciting to see their unique ideas come to life as they collaborated with one another.  At the end, students lined up their paper chains and shared what went well and what they would do differently.  It was enjoyable to witness how students reflected on their use of their Habits of Character.

Some students in Ms. Sarah's first grade crew wrote their YO buddies a special note after this activity.  I love seeing the positive impact that YO Buddies has on everyone!

Spreading Kindness
This week during Crew, students watched a video called Kindness Boomerang and reflected on the Habits of Character that each person in the video demonstrated and how this impacted other people.  As a crew, we reflected on how we can have a more positive impact on others and how doing something kind for someone else can change their whole day.  We also talked about the power of paying it forward and how kindness can spread throughout our world.

I asked our crew to brainstorm ways we can have a positive impact on each other and they came up with a brilliant idea - Kindness Notes!  Your child will be writing notes of kindness to two students from our crew at home each night.  This note can include kind words, a picture/drawing, and/or a small craft (ie. origami).  This note should be hand-made and should not contain any gifts (food, money, toys, etc.).  The note must include who it is to and who it is from.  When students arrive in the morning, they will place their notes of kindness in our Kindness Mailbox.  I will be delivering the kindness mail to students and they will have a collection of notes from every student in our crew that they will get to open and keep before they leave for winter break.

This is an exciting time for our crew to continue practicing and growing our Habits of Character and spread kindness to others!  Thank you for your support in this!
