Field Work Fun!

Our fourth grade crew visited HRCA Backcountry Base Camp three different times throughout the school year.  Each time we visited, we had a different focus to extend our studies and grow our Habits of Character.

First Visit - February
For our first visit, students visited three different rotations exploring living organisms.  During our first rotation, students identified plants found in the grassland ecosystem and where and how they grow.  In the second rotation, students investigated and formed hypotheses about animal skulls and scat that are found in the grassland ecosystem.  For our final rotation, students were "F.B.I." agents searching for fungus, bacteria, and invertebrates found in the area.

Second Visit - March
For our second visit, students learned how wildfires spread and impact the environment.  They learned that wildfires can have both a negative and positive impact.  Students went on a hike, then played a game demonstrating how wildfires start, spread, and eventually burn out.  They explored two different areas: an area that had not been impacted by wildfire and an area that had a wildfire burn through it last summer.  Students were amazed by their discoveries!

Third Visit - May
During our final visit, students participated in a service learning project in an effort to give back to HRCA Backcountry.  After learning how wildfires spread, students worked to do some fire mitigation in the area.  Students showed great perseverance as they collaborated with their crew.

Thank you HRCA Backcountry for these incredible learning experiences!
